Galungan and Kuningan: Bali’s Celebration of Good over Evil

Galungan is one of the most important holidays on the Balinese Hindu calendar. It celebrates the victory of dharma (good) over adharma (evil), and it is believed that the spirits of ancestors return to visit their families.

When it happens

Galungan follows the 210-day Balinese pawukon calendar, so it takes place roughly twice a year. Kuningan follows ten days later and marks the day the ancestors return to the spirit world.

What you will see

  • Penjor – tall, curved bamboo poles decorated with palm leaves – in front of every home
  • Families in traditional dress walking to the temple with offerings
  • Busy temples and festive villages, especially in the mornings

What it means for your tour

It is a beautiful time to visit Bali. Some temples are busier or reserved for worshippers, and some shops close for the day. Tell us your travel dates and we will plan a route that lets you see the celebrations respectfully.
