Visiting Tanah Lot at Sunset: Tips from a Local Driver

Tanah Lot, the sea temple standing on a rock off the coast of Tabanan, is one of the most photographed places in Bali – and it is just a few minutes from our base. Here is how we plan the visit for our guests.

Arrive early

Sunset is the busiest time of day. We recommend arriving about 90 minutes before sunset so you have time to walk the cliff paths, see the temple from different angles and find a good spot before the crowds.

Check the tide

At low tide you can walk across to the base of the rock. At high tide the temple is surrounded by water, which makes for dramatic photos but means you stay on the shore. Your driver can check the tide times for you.

Combine it with Jatiluwih

Tanah Lot fits perfectly at the end of a West Bali day: the UNESCO rice terraces of Jatiluwih in the morning, the lake temple of Ulun Danu Beratan after lunch and Tanah Lot for sunset.

  • Wear a sarong or bring one – it’s needed for temple areas
  • Bring cash for the entrance ticket and parking
  • Expect heavier traffic after sunset; plan dinner nearby if you are not in a hurry
